Japan issues tsunami alert after major earthquake | Weather News

Japan has issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas near the southern prefecture of Okinawa, after a earthquake struck off the southwestern coast, the country’s national broadcaster has reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the warning for the areas around Okinawa Island, Miyakojima Island and Yaeyama Island, estimating waves of three metres in height.

“Tsunami waves are approaching the coasts. Evacuate as quickly as possible. Waves can hit repeatedly. Continue to evacuate until all warnings are lifted,” the meteorological agency said.
